Here’s a primer on propane tank styles and sizes so you have an idea of what you may need before you sit down with us.
The style of propane tank you will have installed depends on how much propane you will be using, and how you’ll be using it.
Horizontal propane tanks are large, high-capacity containers typically used in homes and businesses where propane is used for heating. Their higher capacity means you won’t need as many propane deliveries.
Vertical propane cylinders are usually installed for appliances which are used intermittently, like for cooking or clothes drying. The smaller, vertical tanks can be placed right up to a building or near a property line, so they blend in better.

120-gallon tank. This is a smaller tank and is commonly used for low-Btu propane appliances such as ranges, water heaters, and space and wall heaters. It is not large enough for whole-house heating.
500-gallon tank. Are you using propane to heat your home? This is the size tank you will need.
1,000-gallon tank. While this big tank is most commonly used in commercial applications, it can also be used at large residential homes that use propane for heating, water heating, cooking, and high-Btu appliances like pool heaters.
