Marietta is located halfway between Oklahoma City and Dallas and is the county seat of Love County.
Europeans first came to the area in the 18th century, as the Red River was a travel route for French and Spanish traders and explorers. The Spanish built a fort nearby, and then early settlers Abel Warren and Holland Coffee established a trading post here in the 1830s.
Settlement in the area continued through the 19th century, as the fertile land along the Red River was outstanding for farming and ranching. The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century helped Marietta prosper, as local farmers and ranchers were able to get their products to market more easily.
Marietta, population 550, was incorporated on June 2, 1898. A local legend says that the town was named for the wife of the town postmaster, Jerry Washington. Her name was Marie Etta.
The arrival of Interstate 35 caused an economic downturn in Marietta, with two major employers, Marietta Bakery and Siemens Dematic, closed. The Chickasaw Nation has been a major reason the local economy has improved. It bought the Siemens Dematic facility and it now builds and repairs oil field equipment there. The Nation also bought the Marietta Bakery and reopened it. The opening of the Nation’s WinStar Casino in nearby Thackerville has led to jobs for many Marietta residents.
